Freddy Guarin had a serious alcohol problem.

The former player of Porto, Inter, Shanghai SIPG and the Colombian national team Freddy Guarin spoke about his addiction to alcohol, which he experienced during his football career.

According to Guarin, his problems started during his stay in the Nerazzurri camp and continued after moving to China.

“I started to make a name for myself in Italy, and then other problems started off the field. The stadium started to get quiet, and for the first time I dealt with the situation very well: I got drunk 2 days before the match, then went on the field, scored 1-2 goals and the team won.

I think it all started with a lack of conscience. I failed in all my goals, both football and personal. I feel like I have no limits. I was completely taken by alcohol, they came to tell me through an agent that I could no longer stay in Milan: “You have to get him away from here, now…”

In China, I knew what real wine was and from the first day of my arrival I became an alcoholic. I will get up to practice, and after practice I will drink wine. I rested a bit, trained and drank wine. Every day like this. Those times were hard, I was completely drunk for 10 days. I will go to sleep tired and wake up with a beer by my side.”

Freddie also told how, because of his addiction, he almost died falling from the 17th floor.

“I lived on the 17th floor and disconnected from life, from everything. My reaction was, I jumped to the balcony. But there was a net, I jumped, and it came back to me, obviously, I didn’t notice. ‘I don’t understand what I’m doing and I don’t know what happened,” said Guarin

The former midfielder hangs up his boots in 2021. His last club was Millonarios in his homeland.
