“El Niño” coaches Atlético’s reserve team and hopes to subsequently become the coach of the Matrasnikov first team
Former forward and now mentor Fernando Torres rejected the offer of head coach position Deportivo.
40-year-old Torres leads Atletico Madrid’s double team. The Galicians first approached the Mattress Makers directly with an offer to buy out the existing El Niño contract. However, Atlético’s management refused.
Further, Deportivo has already addressed Torres directly. Fernando also refused to leave his home club. It is reported that Torres is happy at Atlético, has the full confidence of the club’s management and expects to subsequently replace Diego Simeone as the main team of the Matrasnikov.
Fernando retired from playing in 2019. In 2021, he joined Madrid as assistant coach of the youth team, and subsequently took charge of Atlético B.
Together with the youth team Matrasnikov, Torres won two trophies. Atlético B, under his leadership, is in fourth place in Group 2 in the First Division of the Federation (the third strongest in the structure of Spain).
