Western Sydney Wanderers Australian midfielder Juan Mata has become part-owner of MLS club San Diego, according to the American team’s website.
Mata became the first active footballer to hold an ownership stake in an MLS club.
“Joining San Diego is a great opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that is experiencing incredible growth.” “I look forward to sharing my experience and passion for the game and working together to build a club that inspires on and off the pitch,” Mata said.
Previously, Mata played for Spanish Valencia, English Chelsea and Manchester United, Turkish Galatasaray and Japanese Vissel Kobe. He is winner of the Champions League and the Europa League, world champion (2010) and European champion (2012) within the Spanish national team.
