Today the blue-yellows will find out their opponents in the fight for a place in Division A
On Friday, November 22, The Ukrainian national team recognizes its opponent in the fight for a place in Division A. The blue-yellows, who finished in second place in their quartet of Division B, will receive as opponents one of the four teams that became third in the “elite League” – Hungary, Serbia, Scotland or Belgium. The playoff matches will take place on March 20 and 23, 2025, and from the Ukrainian national team in confrontations with potential opponents in the Nations League playoffs negative balance only with Hungary.
Hungary: two defeats
The blue-yellows played in the Hungarian national team twice, and even at the beginning of their performances. It was against Hungary that Ukraine played the first match in its history, losing in Uzhgorod – 1:3 on April 29, 1992.
Four months later, Hungary beat Ukraine in Nyiregyháza – 2:1. The teams have not met again for 32 years.
Belgium: memory of Euro 2024
The Ukrainian national team played even fewer matches – only one – with Belgium. But quite recently, within the Euro 2024 group tournament.
In Germany, Ukraine and Belgium played a draw and did not score any goals.
Parity with Scotland
Ukraine played five matches with Scotland. All are official. The blue-yellows won two matches, lost the same number, and ended in a draw.
Ukraine and Scotland played three of these five matches in 2022. The blue-and-yellows knocked the Scots out of the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs (3:1), but lost and tied in the Nations League group (0:3 and 0:0).
Dominance over Serbia
Ukraine played five matches – three friendly and two official – with Serbia. The blue-yellows won four matches and ended in a draw.
The draw occurred in the last head-to-head match between Ukraine and Serbia in the group stage of Euro 2020 qualification, held in Belgrade in November 2019.
