The Ñuñoa stadium is preparing to receive new modifications for the Under-20 World Cup to be held in Chile in 2025.
The National Stadium is gearing up to host another mega-event in a long list in its nearly 86-year history. This is the Under-20 Football World Cup, which will take place from September 27 to October 19, 2025. and which will also have Rancagua, Talca, Valparaíso and Viña del Mar as stages.
The country’s main sports coliseum will undergo a significant transformation in its field, since it will no longer be entirely natural grass but hybrid, since it will contain 5% artificial grass.
The works imply that the Ñuñoíno Hall cannot be used for a period. It is the Minister of Sports Jaime Pizarro himself, who details the implications of this temporary closure.

“It is a decision which already dates back several months, and which the ANFP and the Local Organizing Committee are aware of in order to determine this date and make it. Regardless, changing courts is a quick affair. “It’s something that will take two or three weeks,” he summarizes.
The Secretary of State was optimistic, specifying that it would only be closed during the first month of the year: “As for the use of the court, yes. But there will also be other jobs, which are sectors in which there will be bias. For example, in the changing rooms, given that during double matches during a World Cup, more space is needed in the changing rooms and greater comfort.
“But it can be done operationally. There are no restrictions on the presence of work areas and other changing rooms providing the service,” he adds.
$4 billion will be allocated to these arrangements. and in addition to the changing rooms, where cryotherapy bathtubs, changing furniture and massage beds will be installed, work is planned in the public toilets, where new artifacts will be installed.
A new closure
But Pizarro also shares details about the deadlines before the nomination. “According to the rules and requests of international events, the stadium must be unavailable 45 to 60 days in advance, for optimal maintenance, and will only be delivered for the championship. This includes ensuring that during July, August and September the stadium is unused and the pitch is maintained in optimal condition. And this is done with respect for all the sites which will be part of the World Cup,” he anticipates.
This is why he emphasizes that the information was transmitted on time to the ANFP who mobilized and scheduled the season based on the organization of the event.
At the same time, the other event venues will also undergo significant upgrades to meet the standards required in a competition of this scale.
