The miners suffered a disappointing defeat with a score of 2:3
Mentor Shakhtar Marino Pusic summed up the results of the meeting with PSV (2:3) in the fifth round of the group stage of the Champions League. The coach of the Donetsk club called the removal of Pedro Enrique the key moment of the meeting.
“Yes, at first it was a great game, but after the red card everything went wrong – and that made me very angry. If you have one less person, it’s hard. Our goalkeeper did a very good job, showed a great game, but then when we got the goal from an impossible angle, I told my team that they should use the emotion of the stadium. But this also helped PSV. My players did everything they could, they fought until the very end, but the sending off is what changed the game.”
“At first everything went well in our game, but I know that the match lasts a long time and, despite the fact that we have 10 players left on the field, we still need to continue to play. Yes, the opponents constantly pressed, especially from the flanks – they are known for this, good flank play. They are also a team that builds their attacks from deep and we had to find a balance. We prepared for this, trained and were finally able to score very good goals. There was a lot of space in the center of the field and I think we played very well in the middle of the match too. And to summarize, I will say that it was a good game, but this red card… If they ask me about it again, there will be a lot of emotions. Of course it’s hard.”
“We showed a good game, and last season we showed what we are capable of, but it is no longer appropriate to talk about it. Maybe there are not very famous players on our team, but they perform very well in the game, you can see it yourself. And I’m constantly proud of them because my players try so hard.”
“I told my players that I was proud of them, that they tried and did everything they could. PSV is, of course, a high-level team and it is difficult to repel their attacks.”
In the 69th minute, Pedro Enrique was sent off. In the majority, Peter Bosz’s team began to create chances; Dmitry Riznyk had to help the team out in several cases. But he was powerless in the 87th minute, missing Malik Tillman’s free-kick into the near corner. And three minutes later, the American scored a double with a luxurious long-range strike.
In the remaining time, Riznyk made another save. The guests only had to hold out for nothing when PSV’s attack was crowned with success: fresh Pepi, in the turmoil at the goal of the Ukrainian team, scored the winning goal.
The miner did not retain the victory, and even failed to maintain a draw. With four points, the Miners are in 26th place in the overall standings, just outside the playoff zone. The team from Eindhoven is in 18th place (8 points).
