Bayer’s leader became the first player this season to win this award twice
Midfielder Bayera Florian Wirtz recognized as the best player of the game week (5th round) Champions League 2024/25.
The 21-year-old German, who scored two goals and an assist in the 5-0 win over Salzburg, beat out PSV colleague Malik Tillman (the hero of the crazy comeback against Shakhtar) in the voting, as well as two strikers of Argentine origin – Mateo Retegui of Atalanta and Julian Alvarez from Atlético.
For Wirtz, this award is already the second of the season – he previously became the laureate of the first game week. Besides him, Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund), Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) and Victor Diekeres (Sporting) were recognized as the best players of the tour. In total, Florian played 19 matches in all tournaments, scoring nine goals and four assists.
Let us remind you that 17-year-old Ukrainian Artem Stepanov also took part in the mentioned defeat of Salzburg, who played his debut 17 minutes for the first team of Pharmacists.
Earlier, UEFA published a ranking of the best saves of the reporting week. The list also included the new Champions League record holder, Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.
The leader of the overall standings is Liverpool, which took the maximum points and secured early entry into the playoffs. Bayer is sixth with 10 points. Shakhtar is in 26th place (two positions below the playoff zone).
