IFAB expands experience to test system to challenge VAR decisions

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has expanded the experiment to test the Football Video Support System (FVS), the organization’s press service reports.

It is worth noting that testing has been expanded to provide a “worldwide cost-effective solution”.

The system was used at this year’s Under-20 and Under-17 Women’s World Cups. FVS was approved for testing in March. This gives coaches the opportunity to challenge VAR decisions twice per match.

The system should increase the accuracy of refereeing decisions and minimize the likelihood of errors and controversial episodes. The system draws inspiration from similar practices in other sports like tennis or volleyball, where coaches can appeal controversial decisions via video replays.

In November, FIFA Referees Committee chairman Pierluigi Collina said several FIFA member associations had already expressed interest in participating in the trials. According to him, if the IFAB gives its authorization, several competitions using FVS will take place next year.

The next IFAB general assembly is scheduled for March 1, 2025.
