Four teenagers received prison sentences
German Regional Court Essen sentenced four teenagers accused of killing Ukrainian basketball players Artem Kozachenko And Vladimir Ermakov.
The trial of the four accused began six months after the murder of the Ukrainians and lasted five months. The teenagers, aged 14, 15 and 16, appeared in court. Two of the accused are German citizens and two are Syrian citizens.
All four received prison sentences. Two teenagers were sentenced to 10 years, two – to 8.5 years. The teenagers’ lawyers plan to appeal the decision.
Ermakov, together with compatriot Artem Kozachenko, played for the ART Giants youth team from Dusseldorf. On the eve of the next championship game, in February of this year, an armed attack was carried out on Ukrainian basketball players.
The cause of the conflict is the nationality of Kozachenko and Ermakov. Both players were hospitalized: doctors were unable to save Ermakov, and Kozachenko died 10 days later in intensive care.
Vladimir Ermakov and Artem Kozachenko played as part of the Ukrainian U-16 youth team. As part of the blue-yellow players, they took part in the 2022 European Championship in Bulgaria.
