German coach resigned after Champions League defeat
Chelsea London announced the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel as head coach of the team after the defeat in the first round match of the Champions League group stage against Dinamo Zagreb. It is unlikely that this result in the game with the Croatian team decided the fate of the German manager, because even before the match in the Champions League Chelsea frankly did not impress in This season: The Blues have lost two matches in the Premier League, and all the championship victories were given to them with great difficulty. Howbeit, the British football community did not have the feeling that Tuchel would lose his job at Stamford Bridge anytime soon.
This year, Chelsea changed not only the owner, but the entire management of the club. Instead of Roman Abramovich, the Londoners’ new boss is American businessman Todd Boely, who came to the club with his team and spared no expense in the transfer market last summer. Blue spent on new players over £270m and set a record for spending in the English Premier League in a single transfer window. Such activity clearly hinted at the big plans of the new Chelsea management and their complete understanding with the head coach of the team, which clearly required strengthening.

However, the unexpected crisis at the start of the new season did not save Tuchel from the fate of many previous Chelsea managers who were sacked after the first serious setbacks. Sacking head coaches at the most unobvious moment and not giving them time to build a new team was a hallmark of the Londoners in the Abramovich era, and it seems that the new owner of the club will stick to the policy of his predecessor for now.
Chelsea, under Tuchel, only finished third in the Premier League last season, behind Manchester City and Liverpool. The Londoners are indeed hopelessly behind the leaders of the Premier League, so the successful and fruitful work of the club in the summer transfer window should have helped the Blues close the gap in class between them and their main competitors in the fight for the title. Chelsea bolstered every problematic position last summer and the late transfer of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with whom Tuchel worked at Borussia Dortmund, seemed to further confirm the club’s willingness to trust the head coach.
Chelsea started the new campaign as one of the main favorites of the season in England, but from the first rounds of the championship, things did not go according to their scenario for the Londoners. In the opening game of the season, the Blues beat Everton only thanks to a Jorginho goal from the penalty spot, and victories over equally problematic Leicester and West Ham by just one goal difference were, to put it mildly, underwhelming. Defeats to Leeds and Southampton were also a serious blow to the team’s ambitions this season, but the turning point, perhaps, was the meeting against Tottenham in the second round, which was the beginning of all Chelsea’s failures this season.
The London derby between the Blues and Spurs turned out to be very spectacular and rich in goals scored, but, first of all, it was remembered for its emotions and the conflict between the coaches during and after the match. The team of Thomas Tuchel missed the victory already in injury time and the German coach was clearly annoyed by this result, provoked Antonio Conte after the final whistle and corny emotionally burned out that day. His behavior near the bench and his reaction to key moments in that match surprised even the Blues fans, causing a lot of questions.

Poor results and not the most attractive football at the start of the season may be just one of the reasons why the Chelsea management decided on such an unexpected step in early September. The Londoners, under the leadership of Tuchel, really played frankly badly, the team had an incredibly hard time scoring goals, and in defense, the Blues defenders made a lot of mistakes and looked very unconvincing. Now the German mentor has an iron-clad excuse that he was simply not given time to create a new team and integrate all summer newcomers into it, and progress in terms of the game would have happened in the near future. And there is a lot of truth in the words of the ex-coach of Borussia D and PSG, because the current crisis has become the first serious test for him while working at the London club. And he, in fact, was not even given the opportunity to correct the situation.

Tuchel’s disagreements with some of the team’s players are also not excluded, given the difficult nature of the German and his inability to control his emotions. No one knows what happened in the Chelsea dressing room after unsuccessful matches and exactly how the Blues players reacted to the head coach’s displeasure, which definitely took place. Thomas faced problems within the team at PSG, and it was the inability to find a common language with the star leaders of the Parisians that cost him his job at the French club.

A conflict with the club’s new owner could be another reason for Tuchel’s premature departure from Chelsea. The Blues management really gave the German incredible money for new players and, perhaps, expected good results from the very first matches of the new season, and a shocking start could be as unpleasant a surprise for them as for Londoners fans. In addition, the British press wrote about the differences between Tuchel and Boeli on the issue of personnel policy. The American businessman wanted to keep midfielder Billy Gilmour on the team, on whose departure Tuchel insisted. As a result, on the last day of the transfer window, the 21-year-old Scot moved to Brighton on a full-fledged basis.
Thomas Tuchel will go down in Chelsea history as the manager who won the second Champions League title in the club’s history and did so in the shortest possible time. It took the German less than half a year to make the Londoners the best team in Europe and this achievement will definitely be one of the most outstanding of his career. Together with Sinimi, the German won three trophies, and in total he spent 100 matches at the helm of the team, winning 62 of them. It is also interesting that as the Blues manager he stayed only 18 days longer than Frank Lampard, who replaced Tuchel at Chelsea in the winter of 2021. Of course, with such indicators, achievements and experience at the highest level, the German will definitely receive an invitation to another big club.

Whoever becomes the new head coach of Chelsea, he will have at his disposal a very cool and complete team, with which you can and should set the highest goals and objectives. For the Londoners, nothing has been lost yet in any of the tournaments and there is plenty of time to catch up. Another thing is that the new Blues mentor should be well aware that he, like Tuchel, will not have a privileged position, which means that any, even the very first major failure, can cost him a job at Stamford Bridge in the future.
