In Monza, Max Verstappen had his worst qualifying of the season, in which he recorded the seventh fastest time. Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko said the team currently has no explanation for the lack of speed.
‘It’s incomprehensible! – Marco commented on the results of qualifying at German Sky. – In the second session we lost only a few hundredths to Lewis Hamilton, and in the final the car suddenly stopped moving. We made small adjustments to the settings before the final, and in theory they shouldn’t have affected anything. We’re confused.
In the final, Sergio Perez’s attempt on the rolled-in tyres was faster than on the new set, although the old tyres are usually three to four tenths slower. Something is not right here.”
Marco denies, however, that all is lost for Red Bull. He believes that the team can fight for victory in Monza: “There are certainly chances. We have to analyse everything. In the second part of qualifying we had speed. Fortunately, you can overtake in Monza.
“I don’t think anyone can escape from the pack after the start. Only if McLaren uses the slipstream wisely and doesn’t fight each other, they have a chance. For us, nothing is lost yet. But if we also lack speed in the race, then everything will be bad.”
