Horner: We’ve gone too far with the settings

Ahead of qualifying at the Singapore circuit, Red Bull Racing principal Christian Horner spoke about the tasks the team has set itself to minimise losses, as the RB20 car is not yet fast.

Christian Horner: “We tried something yesterday, but this approach didn’t work. We probably fell into some kind of trap, because a year ago on this uneven circuit the behaviour of the car was just shocking. That’s why we went overboard now by changing the settings, despite the fact that the track surface has been updated.

Sebastien Buemi, who has been with us for many years, spent the whole night behind the wheel of the simulator, looking for a way to improve the settings. As a result, Max Verstappen drove fastest on Medium tyres, but on soft tyres the car is still not stable.

But these tires are unpredictable and you never know how they will behave.”

Horner also commented on rumours that Daniel Ricciardo will have to hand over his seat behind the wheel to Liam Lawson after the Singapore Grand Prix: “We are constantly analysing everything that is happening as a whole, and of course we see the picture in its entirety, and it is much broader, so this is not just a question about Daniel.

We are moving forward and we are continuing to evaluate all possible options. There is a break of almost a month between us and the next race, and it is only normal that we will analyze everything for the last part of the season.

“We are not going to act to harm Daniel. We know what the results are – we have collected a large amount of information on this topic. But the picture is much broader than this whole carousel of racers. And during the break between races we will definitely conduct a comprehensive analysis of the situation.”
