San Francisco Giants outfielder Harrison Bader has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after a late-night electric scooter crash involving a fire engine in San Francisco's Marina district.
Bader, 32, was already on the injured list recovering from plantar fasciitis in his left foot when the incident occurred around 1:50am on Sunday. According to local reports, he crashed into the back of a firetruck, and the vehicle's wheel then ran over his foot, causing what was described as a major injury.
A Giants statement said the crash complicated his existing plantar fasciitis and that the impact changed the nature of his medical evaluation. The team ordered fresh MRI scans and altered a planned trip to Indianapolis, where he had been scheduled to consult a specialist.
Multiple witnesses claimed Bader had been seen drinking at several bars across the city in the hours before the crash.
Giants manager Tony Vitello confirmed Thursday that Bader's first season in San Francisco is effectively over. He said the crash would delay Bader's recovery and called a return this season a longshot even before the incident. When asked whether Bader could face internal disciplinary action, Vitello said the front office was sorting through the circumstances and he would not rule anything out.
Bader signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Giants in the offseason. He had not played since May 29 and was hitting .170 with five home runs across 30 games before the crash.
