The local directors as well as the president of the Korn Ferry Tour made the official announcement of the tournament which will arrive in Santiago in March 2023, providing several details relevant to the circuit. Initially, a contract was signed for four editions.
This Thursday, the organization of the Chile Classic held an opening ceremony for its 2023 edition, which will mark the return, after eight years of absence, of the Korn Ferry Tour category tournaments in the country. The event director and the president of the PGA screening tour were present at the conference.
A tournament that will land in the country between March 27 and April 2019, bringing together 156 first-level players who will compete for an accumulated bolsa of 1 million dollars, the highest prize that will enter a golf event in the country.
It excites fans with having some great Korn Ferry figures on the Prince Of Wales Country Club course and despite the names not yet being known, Tournament Director Alejandro Peric is confident that the level will be very high. “We’re not talking about a long-term projection tour, but a medium- and short-term one. Scottie Scheffler is number one in the world and two years ago he participated in the Korn Ferry, so the level is spectacular. The players who arrive in Chile in 2023 are going to be figures on the world circuit in the short term” He launched.
Of course, the Korn Ferry Tour president was candid about the option of being able to add Mito Pereira as a guest at the event. “ Korn Ferry Tour tournaments are for Korn Ferry people only. Mito has his PGA card so he plays on the PGA” Alex Baldwin made that clear.
On the other hand, Peric also took the opportunity to comment on other striking details of the Astara Chile Classic, pointing out that the the contract signed with the Korn Ferry covers four editions therefore top level golf in the country is guaranteed until 2026. He also added that there will be a selection process to define some of the guest quotas, other tournaments taking place in the country entering this formula.
“In the quotas that we have for the guests, we will make a classification counting certain tournaments of the calendar of the Federation. One of them will be the Patagonia Classic which takes place in Frutillar in October and other traditional tournaments such as the Abierto del Country, the Abierto de Los Leones and whatever else can happen in La Serena and Santo Domingo . announced the director of the Chile Classic.
This idea of generating more competition and interest for the continent is shared by the Board of Directors of Korn Ferry. It was the president herself who said this during the press conference, specifying that it is an interesting market and that it must be promoted, but that at the moment the plans are not going to beyond Chile, Colombia and Panama, the three Latin American countries that have contests in the official 2023 calendar.
Finally, it was also announced that the La Reina venue had signed a contract only for 2023, but the organization was willing to continue hosting the event in the country. “AHere are all the items you need to organize a Korn Ferry tournament. The three-year experience was also a very relevant factor when making the decision. It’s a special court, North Americans aren’t very used to this type of court and it’s an attraction. The word has spread among them that this court generates new challenges and difficulties, and for them it is important to play it” concludes Peric.
