Mito Pereira makes his debut in the 22/23 PGA season: the Chilean begins his participation in the Shriners Children’s Open today

The Chilean will play his first accounting event on the calendar, since although the Presidents Cup is part of the current route, it does not award points for the FedEX Cup. The tournament distributes $8 million in prize money.

One of the most defining things about the PGA is its extended schedule. There is practically no rest, and when the last course event says goodbye, the first of the next already appears. The best proof of that is that in just over a month, we’ve gone from the 21/22 playoff final to the fourth event (if you count the Presidents Cup) of 22/23. An instance in which Mito Pereira will be.

The Chilean will train in the new accounting season (the event he played with the international team is part of the 22/23 calendar but does not give points for the FedEx Cup) in the Shriners Children’s Open, an event that begins Thursday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In this way, Pereira will be looking to add his first points of the season, having missed out on the Fortinet Championship and the Sanderson Farms Championship. A decision which also puts a cold sheet on the rumors that the North American media have launched about a possible departure of the Chilean to LIV to accompany Niemann in the super league.

In Las Vegas, he will try to overcome a complex course like TPC Summerlin composed of 7,255 yards and a par 71 . He will be accompanied by powerful names from the tour such as Sungjae Im, Tom Kim, Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa, as well as Argentinians Emiliano Grillo and Augusto Núñez.

Mito will come out to play the first round of the event this Thursday at 10:51 a.m. in Chile , accompanied by the American Ryan Armor and the Englishman Matt Wallace. Everyone will compete for a cumulative prize pool of $8 million.

Driven by an extraordinary season

This Thursday, Mito will give the green light to the second season integrated into the PGA Tour. This, since, although he played a few tournaments in 2020/21, it was only last year that he was able to play the full schedule on the most important circuit in the world.

A “rookie” season that left him as one of the best rookies of the year. With an immediate impact, the native of Pirque managed to challenge two of three heats, ranked 50th in the FedEx Cup and with two third places under the arm.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of that streak was the PGA Championship, where he not only achieved his first top five at a major, but was inches away from touching glory and lifting the Wanamaker after a week in which he showed his best golf.

That is why the sensations are more than positive. At 27, he is at a pivotal moment in his career and, now that Niemann is no longer on the circuit, has established himself as the best Latin American on the PGA Tour. Last season also added $2.7 million in earnings.

The Presidents their last event

The myth comes from experiencing one of the most important moments of his short but explosive career: being part of the international team for the Presidents Cup, the tournament that pits the United States against the rest of the world (not counting the ‘Europe).

For this 2022, the competition was again for the North Americans, who overtook Mito Pereira’s team by 17.5 against 12.5. The Chilean, on the other hand, has been in action on three of the four matchdays, recording a draw and two defeats.
