Mito Pereira loses lead at Shriners Children’s Open

The Chilean finished third, three strokes behind Patrick Cantlay, who is the leader with -19. The American showed a superlative performance, preventing the Chilean from going higher, despite performing well.

Mito Pereira was unable to repeat his performance Friday at the Shriners Children’s Open. The Chilean was in competition with Patrick Cantlay, Tom Kim and Matthew NeSmith. Beyond the positive level displayed by the national golfer, this Saturday the big winner was the North American, who gave quite an exhibition.

After 4:00 p.m. in Chile, the participation of the man from Santiago began. He left in the lead, with -12, after his spectacular afternoon performance on October 7th. He started well, but on his second hole he fell a few places. At that time, in first place was the British Aaron Rai.

His first birdie of the day came on the 7th hole, which left him to one of the leaders, Rai and Cantlay. It had been two hours since he had started his match and had taken third place, after a few moments of doubt. The highlight for Pereira was on the ninth hole, when he climbed to the split direction. The Chilean took advantage of the par-5, birdie to reach -14, joining the leaders we have just mentioned.

However, Cantlay did not give up and moments later took the lead alone. The world number four did an exceptional job, birding eleven in total. On the 14th hole, after failing to take advantage of a par -5 on the previous one, Mito Pereira managed a par -3. On this occasion, his distance with Cantlay was reduced to three, with -15 for the Chilean and -18 for the one born in California.

In the end, Patrick Cantlay closed his participation on Saturday with -19 in the general classification, just like the South Korean Tom Kim. Mito, on the 16th hole, made his last birdie of the day. This one came in at -16. Finally, the Chilean closed his day with a pair. In third place. With the same number as Pereira (-16) the North American Matthew NeSmith finished.
