Chileans who lived abroad and want to bring their vehicle must meet several conditions to achieve their goal, although they would not have the same luck as the Colombian.
A few days ago, Shakira moved to live in Miami with her children. But the Colombian is not only recognized for her music, but also for her passion for sports cars and SUVs (even if Renault was not amused by her song with Bzrp and its allusion to the Twing).
In response to this taste of “nuts”, and because of her divorce which will change her country of residence, the interpreter of Pies Descalzos intends to move 10 cars from Spain to the United States. Now, if she lived in Chile, could she bring all these vehicles?

Importing vehicles into the country is not an easy task. Undoubtedly, many want to do this when they return after living abroad, but the requirements in Chile are diverse and are limited to one car per person.
This means that Shakira’s wishes in our country would have been very different and she could not fit into the 10 models she has in mind, according to international media, ranging from a Mercedes S-Class to a Mercedes SL550, passing through a Tesla Model S, Audi A7 Sportback, Mercedes SLK250, BMW X6, Seat León, Audi Q7, Jeep Wrangler and a Mini Cooper.
Chilean customs requirements:
For a person who returns to the country and wishes to return with the vehicle that he used abroad, the requirements are as follows:
- to be chilean
- Being older than 18
- Have lived abroad for 18 months or more without interruption
- You can only import a maximum of one car per person
- It can be a new or used vehicle.
- It must have been acquired abroad at least six months before returning to the country.
- Must have three way catalyst
- Exceptionally, it can be purchased in a free zone in Chile, within a period of up to 120 days before or after the return.
What type of vehicle could be imported?
Customs establishes that only family-type cars, jeep-type SUVs and the like (may have all-wheel drive), motorhomes, vans and trucks can be allowed. However, truck tractors or articulated trucks are excluded.
What costs should be taken into account?
When entering the vehicle, 6% of the customs value of the vehicle must be paid, the value added tax (VAT) which is 19% of the customs value plus customs duties and fees for services provided, such as storage and transfer of goods.
Given all these data and if you meet all the conditions, you must go to Customs in person and make the “Application for Benefit of Position 00.33 of the National Customs Tariff”.

After completing this form, you must collect various documents such as the declaration on honor before a notary indicating that you are returning to Chile permanently in the country, the bill of lading, the commercial invoice or any public document proving that the vehicle belongs to you, the money order to be sent to the customs officer, a copy of the declaration of entry into the suspensive regime and of the travel certificate issued with a date not exceeding thirty days by the immigration unit of the Chilean investigation police .
As you can see, it’s a bit cumbersome and bureaucratic process, but it opens the option for the entry of a car and not the 10 that Shakira takes from Spain after her split with Gerard Pique.
