In this interview, journalists Luis Ugalde and Alejandra González discuss what they have seen in the coverage of cases such as that of Viviana Haeger and Fernanda Maciel.
The names of Vivian Haeger And Fernanda Maciel still arouses public debate . Not only because their cases are among the most controversial in the country’s history, but also, because both encompassed a range of factors that made investigations difficult police .
It is for this very reason that The team of key witness he podcast in charge of the digital domain of Chilevisión and the morning project with you in the morning endeavored to analyze them and to deepen in the points on which this had not been done for the most part.
in conversation with The third , journalists Luis Ugalde and Alejandra González, who lead the conversations in said space, explain what edges they saw in both stories. And with that, they anticipate the next cases that will be covered in the program.

Common factors between cases
Both in the case of Viviana Haeger and Fernanda Maciel, who they say have continued since their inception, they found a trend that is also being replicated in others who have reported.
“We have always encountered failures in the investigation, with delays, and this is a constant. Not just in the two we’ve already shown, but also in the third one that’s coming and we’re working on.” González points out.
Ugalde agrees with this point and points out that “In fact, the first two stories that we touched on, I think they are the emblem of bad investigations” .
“In other words, in one we realize that the victim was 50 meters from his house (…) and that the murderer lived next door” highlights, then adds that “At Viviana Haeger, you have that the victim would have spent 42 days inside the house” .
In this sense, the journalist from Chilevisión Noticias says that “it is scandalous” and that “On the one hand you have the case of a family which has few resources and on the other you have the case of a family which has many” .
“It shows you that negligence is transversal” adds Ugalde.
One of the chapters of key witnessmorning program hosted by Julio César Rodríguez and Montserrat Álvarez, addresses the presence of false information shared by some sources, amid investigations into the crime against Fernanda Maciel .
“I remember that we received information from a family who claimed to have seen this young woman who disappeared in Chile, who saw her in Bariloche” tells Ugalde in a trailer available on Youtube .
It was not an exceptional event. As Ugalde tells La Tercera, “In both stories, people appeared who didn’t help at all, who hindered and who complicated. And we’re interested in talking a bit about that part. ”.
“What is always sought is to try to reach the truth. We don’t do it, the police are trying to do it to get to a forensic truth. Here we report that, but on this road there are also people who obstruct and do not add up (…) apart from all this problem of psychics and mentalists who in 90% of situations bring nothing”.
The journalist from Chilevisión Noticias affirms that “many times, with the intention of just appearing, they give this information which is false and which plays with the pain of others” .
“And I add something else to you,” said Ugalde, “that In the case of Fernanda, there were people who directly delivered false information to divert attention, also due to mistaken preconceptions ”.
“Remember there was always talk of some sort of connection she might have with the drug trade. Later in the trial (…) you realize that it was the crime of a person who was obsessed with her and ended up killing her (…) there is a macho component, he acted to cover up that she was involved in things, that she was asking for it, that she was the culprit in the end, while she was still the victim ”.
Below this line, emphasize that later “it was verified that there weren’t even hitmen involved and that there was no drug problem or anything like that” .
The criteria for approaching the chapters and what is the next premiere
The two journalists point out that Reporting these situations gives them access to a wealth of information, which they do not always detail, for reasons such as respect for the dignity of the victims and that of their families. .
This also influences that they develop their own positions towards certain points, which is why González emphasizes that working with the team to carry out key witness is essential .
“We have meetings before recording the episodes. It’s not like we walk in, sit down and start talking. We see how to touch the subjects and discuss (…) We look at the content and the audiovisual proposal which is then exposed”.
Similarly, Ugalde points out that cases like that of Haeger and Maciel have already been the subject of a court decision, in addition to the fact that the chapters are related to the contingency.
“Ultimately, what we seek is to inform, it is our role as journalists, and also to question” reflects an allusion to the role of institutions.

As for the next case they will deal with in key witness reveal that it will be Antonia Barra .
“There we make known and show a series of situations, I do not know if they were irregularities or injustices experienced, but remember that in this trial an expert came to say at some point that women got drunk to have better sex. (…) a series of paradigms that settle in justice and that as you see in the Antonia case, they found themselves on the ground to achieve a judicial truth that we are currently witnessing, ”he anticipates.
For his part, González says that “These are precisely the cases that have sparked debates and conversations in homes” .
With reference to the contents that have been addressed and those that will be deepened in their next chapters, he points out that An important point is that “remember what happened” .
“You have to learn how badly it was done, because that’s what’s important, behind it all there is a family that has pain and suffering” manifest.
