Both national golfers struggled in the first round of the tournament in Connecticut and nailed three-over-par cards. On the second day, they will have to row from behind to enter the groups that will cross the cut.
Joaquín Niemann and Mito Pereira haven’t had their best day at the Travelers Championship. Both have managed a first round at the request of the field and will have to row from behind on Friday to try to enter the group of players who will make the cut. The Talagantino and the native of Pirque signed three cards on par.
Figures that leave them outside of the top 100 event places and with a lot of pressure before a Friday where the cut could be E or +1, always depending on what the golfers do in the second round. But anyway the Chileans they must take up what was shown during the inaugural passage at TPC River Highlands of Cromwell, Conn.
The first to step out on the court was Mito, who after a US Open where he couldn’t make the cut, sought to return to the level he has as the player with the most rounds under par (51) in the 21/22 season . But the problems appeared on the fourth hole of the day.
At flag 13 (started at 10), he was penalized for an unplayable ball and received the first penalty of the day. The worst that came immediately after when he nailed a double bogie on a hole where he had a stroke that went out of bounds.
After that, he would have trouble again on the 18th, scoring the second double bogey of the day, in just nine flags. A ball in the sand bunker and putting errors led to a difficult first leg, which left him very exposed on the table.
Unfortunately, the return he made from the sixth to the ninth hole wasn’t enough to wipe out all the damage he sustained in the first nine flags he played that day. The birdies he signed at six, seven and nine still leave him with a +3 card , near the T130. On Friday you need a change of switch to play on the weekend.
Niemann, on the other hand, started off on a calm day, but when he reached the eighth hole, trouble came and went too. There were three flags where he received consecutive punishments and where he crowned with a painful double bogey on the 10th hole which left him with a momentary +4 card.
But after that he managed to improve and get birdies at 11 and 13 it made them imagine that the worst was over and that there was still time for another discount that would push them up positions. Something that unfortunately did not come.
Joaquín closed the day with another bug on 18 , staying with the same balance as his partner and friend. A gray day for national golfers in Traveleres, a tournament that has always favored players who hit long like Niemann.
Friday will be a key day to see if the Chileans have a chance to play the weekend or say goodbye to the event early. Despite the bad Thursday, everything can change in 18 holes.
