Mito Pereira and Joaquín Niemann start strong at Genesis Scottish Open

The Chileans got some under par cards and even the Pirque native nailed a -4 that puts him in the top ten of the event. All in a competition that works in preview at The Open, the last major of the season.

The Scottish Open receives the best players in the world as a prelude to the 150th edition of The Open, the last major of the season and which takes place again this year in St Andrew. Among this handful of selected golfers are Joaquín Niemann and Mito Pereira, who today began their journey through the country of the thistle with good results. That of Pirque nailed a -4 card and the talagantino collected a -1 which also places him in high places.

A start that takes on more value if you consider the natural complications of a course like the Renaissance Club, which is located on the edge of the North Sea and is a point where the British wind blows strongly from the coast. In addition, the Chileans have just played the Travellers, a tournament where the geographical characteristics (and the terrain) have nothing to do with those of Edinburgh.

Despite this, the national delegation was inspired today, succeed in being among the best positions of the day especially Mito who is even in the top ten after the first day.

Guillermo started from the hole and was immediately seen with a revenge after failing to make the cut with the Travelers . He birdied flag two, three and five, already achieving a balance in those early holes that puts him squarely in the fight to retain one of the top positions.

Things then improved with 10s and 12s put backs, showing that Pereira had found the golf that puts him in the PGA elite and with a shot at being ‘Rookie of the Year’. A day with -5 in a field like the Scottish Open is a tall order. For it the bogey he signed in the 18th hurt a lot . An error on the green prevented the Chilean from finishing the flag in four strokes and closing the day at four under par.

Niemann instead started at flag 10 and had a much more eventful day than Mito. He had to deal with changes to his card throughout the round but still managed to stay below par, ranking among the players with the best balance on Thursday.

The winner of the PGA tournaments, got discounts on 12 and 13, but penalties on 15 and 16 , closing the first nine holes par. Luckily for the Chilean, in the second round of his innings he managed to keep a negative result on his card, thanks to two birdies and a bogey.

With one under par, he positions in the top 40 of the Genesis Scottish Open, with great chances of overcoming the cut on Friday.

The nationals begin their European journey with good feelings. They didn’t care about the change in time, the change in conditions or the strong wind from the south of Scotland. They want to celebrate in one of the most iconic countries in world golf.
