Long weekend: the main recommendations for a safe car trip

With the arrival of a new long weekend, where thousands of people across the country are preparing to travel, we leave you with different tips so that you do not have to regret any inconvenience.

Tomorrow, Friday December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated and, according to figures from the authorities, more than a million people are expected at the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Lo Vásquez. And although there are already traffic cuts to ensure a safe pilgrimage to the Region V temple, many people will also take advantage of the long weekend to escape to different spas and thus enjoy a new vacation.

It is one of the last major holidays remaining in 2023, in fact after this weekend there will only be Monday 25 left for Christmas. It is therefore expected that during these days we will see a significant flow on the main roads of our country.

Faced with this, it is extremely important to have advance planning, check the actual condition of the vehicle and remain patient when traveling on roads and/or highways.

Remember that, according to government authorities, the planned reduction in traffic on Route 68 will take place between today and tomorrow, in both directions. The times are as follows:

  • Metropolitan Region (direction Valparaíso): Thursday 7 from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Friday 8 from 00:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • Valparaíso region (direction Santiago): Thursday 7 from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and Friday from 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Before starting the route, check the following details:

  • Make sure all vehicle systems are in good condition, including the lights, tires and steering.
  • Check oil and coolant level
  • Operation of the braking system
  • Check battery and fuel
  • Check if the air conditioning is working properly (especially on those days when a heatwave is expected in the central area)
  • Make sure you have all vehicle documents
  • Check tire pressure by making sure they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended levels, located next to the driver’s seat door.
  • Check that the windshield wipers are in good condition and that the windshield washer fluid reservoir is full. Good visibility is essential for safety.
  • Make sure all vehicle seat belts work properly and are used correctly.
  • Bring a kit that includes a first aid kit and basic tools that can help you in a possible emergency.
  • Organize your time, this will allow you to avoid being rushed or rushed. Therefore, we recommend planning your departure time and hopefully where to travel when the flow is less. (we recommend using Waze or Google Maps)

Route recommendations:

  • Under no circumstances should you check your cell phone, and if you are accompanied, ask for help. If it’s urgent, look for a gas station
  • Obey speed limits and traffic signs
  • Always wear your seat belt and make sure all passengers do so. If it is a motorcycle, always wear a helmet and appropriate protective equipment.
  • Maintain an adequate distance from other vehicles.
  • Avoid distractions such as smoking, eating, or applying makeup
  • Remember that the left lane is reserved for overtaking
  • Don’t forget to report if you change track
  • Stay hydrated
  • If you feel sleepy or tired, look for a gas station
  • Under no circumstances drink alcohol and/or use drugs.
