From the Fukuyama Environmental Conservation Division, they said that while it is likely the animal is dead, it has not yet been confirmed.
Little cat has triggered a wave of tension in recent days in the city of Fukuyama, Japan .
On Monday, March 11, a worker at the Nomura Plating factory in Fukuyama arrived for work and noticed unusual yellow spots on the floor. Observing them, he realized that they were feline footprints that led to a container of toxic chemicals, which was 3 meters deep.
After viewing surveillance cameras, the employee was able to identify that the cat had escaped from the factory around 9 p.m. the previous night.
The cat that alerts the city of Japan
The same day the cat’s tracks were discovered, the factory announced what had happened. Japanese authorities issued an alert to the public to avoid any type of contact with the lost cat, as it posed a health risk.
This is due to the fact that the animal fell into a container of hexavalent chromium also known as chromium 6, a compound highly toxic to humans.
According to UK Health Safety Agency some effects that exposure to this element can leave are dermatitis and skin ulcers, inflammation of the respiratory tract, kidney damage and cancer. It could also have serious consequences for pregnant women.
Hexavalent chromium is often used for industrial processes, such as metal finishing and leather tanning, details the US National Cancer Institute .
Local authorities have also asked the community to immediately report the incident if they see a cat that appears “abnormal”. The Fukuyama Environmental Conservation Division said that while it is likely the animal is dead, it has not yet been confirmed.
