VCR will compensate more than 400,000 people affected by internet service interruptions during the pandemic .
The announcement was made by the Sernac on Wednesday, July 10, after a class action lawsuit was filed and a settlement was reached.
In a statement shared by the organization, it was stated that “Since the pandemic, internet service has become crucial for the development of the lives of millions of people in the country” .
“So, after interruptions of this service, Supplier companies have an obligation to compensate their customers, in accordance with the regulations sectoral”.
In the case of VTR, an agreement was reached which includes 413,303 customers of said service, who were affected by one or more interruptions between March and September 2020 .
It was determined that there would be compensation for all those affected even though the outages have been going on for less than an hour.
In this sense, they stated that The amount will be calculated based on the number of hours of interruption that each customer had.
The total compensation amounts to $4,178,009,335, of which an average amount of $10,000 per consumer .
At the same time, from Sernac, they claimed to have managed to pay an additional amount for almost 20,000 people concerned who filed complaints with the control body .
This “cost of loss” will be 0.15 UTM, which translates to about $10,000 .
For reference, A customer who had an outage of 61 hours or more will receive approximately $47,000, while if the outage lasted between 0 and 12 hours, it will be approximately $4,000. On average.
Sernac director Andrés Herrera said: “We appreciate and acknowledge this agreement that we are entering into with VTR and we also appreciate the steps that the company has taken. to restore service continuity and actions to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on such an essential demand as Internet access.
For its part, VTR said: “Thanks to this agreement, We would like to compensate our customers for their inconvenience. This could result in interruptions of the Internet service for the aforementioned reason. We also ratify our commitment to constantly improve ourselves to provide a quality Internet service that meets the needs of our customers.
