The Chileans closed the first with five under par and were in the bottom part of the table composed of 80 couples. Joaco made five birdies, while the one born in Paine scored only once.
The PGA Chileans have been paired in a professional tournament for the first time in their career. Joaquín Niemann and Mito Pereira played the Zurich Classic together and managed to close out a five under par first round. They started with a lot of doubts and bad numbers, but gradually improved, achieving their brightest moment when Talagan’s man netted three straight birdies.
The tournament taking place in New Orleans is an eccentricity within the PGA . The only event played in this pairs format is an instance where the show is more important than the tournament itself. Seeing the best in the world competing side by side, sharing with their great rivals, is not something that can happen every day. That is why it attracts the attention of thousands of fans around the world.
There, between a list that includes 10 of the top 15 in the world , were Joaco and Mito. They enjoyed that first round like the great friends they are and laughed even when things weren’t going well. And it is that above all, this week is a new experience for them. Perhaps that’s why the best shots came when it was already late in the afternoon.
In this first round, the tournament is played under the “best ball” format. That is, both golfers play the flagstick, but the lower mark commands. This is how they compose their map until they have completed all 18 holes.
And the beginning was difficult. Despite signing a birdie on flag two, discounts are not easy . While the rest of the pair discounted and quickly discounted shots, the Chileans were consistently tied. They couldn’t get any birdies and their position in the general draw (which is made up of 80 pairs) dropped significantly. Even in some sections, they remained among the five lowest positions in the tournament.
But Niemann came to save the day. He made consecutive birdies on the 12th, 13th and 14th holes unleashing madness at Louisiana TPC. Thanks to this extraordinary section, the national duo reached -5 on their chart and climbed into the top 60 records of the day. Still far from the cut (the 33 couples with the lowest score) but with chances against the remaining flags and in the second round.
A chance that got entangled again in the 16th. There neither Joaco nor Mito were doing well and added the only bogey of the day . From the tee shots both showed problems and at first it was felt they were going to add up on this hole. A punishment that hurt because it was a short par four, where we did not think that the two could make mistakes.
The positive thing is that they managed to overthrow this bad drink. Joaquín was inspired by this and discounted on the par five of the 18th hole, to return to -5. A) Yes, Niemann closed the day with five birdies, while Paine did so with a .
A balance that unfortunately leaves them at the bottom of the table, far from the leadership of Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who closed with -13. Tomorrow they return to loading, but with another format: the second round is played with interspersed holes . Joaco one, Mito the next.
