Six dead tourists found in Thailand hotel

At a press conference on Wednesday, Bangkok Police Deputy Commander General Noppassin Poonsawat said the six tourists had checked into the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel last weekend. They were given rooms on the fifth and seventh floors.

On Monday, the group decided to hold a meeting in the room on the fifth floor. Around 2:00 p.m. local time, they ordered food and tea for the room. According to reports, there was only one woman there at the time and as the minutes passed, the other guests arrived.

On the same day, everyone had to leave the rooms. However, this did not happen.

Cups of tea drunk by tourists contained traces of cyanide, Thai police said.

On Tuesday, a housekeeper at the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel went to the room on the fifth floor. As the door was locked from the inside, the police officer was forced to force her to open it.

A few minutes later, he discovered the bodies of the tourists. Intact plates of food, protected by plastic to prevent them from getting cold, as well as cups of tea were also found. Preliminary examinations revealed that the cups contained traces of cyanide.

The Vietnamese victims were identified as Thi Nguyen Phuong (46), Hong Pham Thanh (49), Thi Nguyen Phoong Lan (47) and Dinh Tran Phu (37), while the Americans are Sherine Chong (56) and Dang Hung Van (55.)

Although a seventh person who was listed in the hotel booking, and who was the sister of one of the victims, was initially investigated, this hypothesis was later ruled out when it was identified that she was outside Thailand on those days.

Thai police said one of the six members of the group was the one who carried out the poisonings at the hotel. This is because two of them had lent “millions of Thai baht” to another victim to supposedly invest.

“One of the relatives said that one of the deceased was an investment agent and everyone was investing, but business was not going as planned. They made an appointment to discuss the matter in Thailand,” Noppasin said.

In recent years, Thailand has sought to position itself as an attractive tourist destination, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Just days before the bodies of the tourists were found, the government announced it would increase the number of countries that do not require visas to travel to the country from 57 to 93.

Despite these attempts, several episodes of violence have occurred on Thai territory in recent years. In August 2023 Daniel Sancho, son of famous Spanish actor Rodolfo Sancho, murdered and dismembered Colombian doctor Edwin Arrieta on the paradise island of Koh Phangan. In October of the same year, 14-year-old boy kills two people in luxury Siam Paragon shopping mall located a few blocks from the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel.
