Two decades after the release of the film based on Jane Austen’s book, the British actor has revealed he had doubts about being selected for the lead role.
Matthew Macfadyen He has shone in several important roles throughout his acting career and one of the most memorable is that of Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice .
Since its release in 2005, the film directed by Joe Wright has been a huge success around the world: it has grossed over 100 million dollars and received four nominations for the iconic Oscars.
But all that glitters is not gold. While one might think Macfadyen has fond memories of his time recording the film, the actor recently admitted that wasn’t the case.
Why Matthew Macfadyen Didn’t ‘Fit’ in Pride and Prejudice
According to the story of the British actor, also known for his participation in the series Succession, during the recordings of Pride and Prejudice He didn’t feel so comfortable since he thought he had been “poorly cast” to play Mr. Darcy.
“I didn’t feel bold enough.” he revealed during an interview with CBS Mornings.
Those doubts ultimately proved wrong, as he acknowledged that his portrayal of Jane Austen’s character worked successfully. “I feel bad saying that,” he said.
“There were times when I was having a good time, but I wish I had enjoyed it more. “I wish I had worried less,” he added during the dialogue.

Nearly two decades after the release of the film, which also starred Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, Macfadyen says he is deeply grateful when he is recognized for his role as Mr. Darcy. “It’s probably the most flattering thing that’s happened to me right now.” he said.
“It’s been 20 years, so I guess I can’t age that badly,” he added with a laugh.
Wright, the film’s director, said in an interview with FilmFreak that casting Knightley in the lead role favoured Macfadyen as a partner.”I think Matthew is obviously less of a star than Keira, so if she hadn’t played Elizabeth, I’m not sure I would have been allowed to cast Matthew. So that’s how it worked. “You try to balance things as much as you can,” he said.
According to the vision of the director who also directed other films like Anna Karenina And AtonementMacfayen is “one of the best actors of his generation in England but, moreover, I knew he would approach the role as any good actor should, and that is by trying to understand the character.”
