Iga Swiatek beats Iva Jovic to reach Beijing quarterfinals

Iga Swiatek reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing after defeating 18-year-old American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-3 in their fourth-round match.

The Polish star dominated the opening set before weathering a second-set fightback from Jovic, who entered the competition seeded 10th as one of the standout new figures on the women's professional tour.

Swiatek, a multi-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, is aiming for another hard-court title in the Chinese capital. The WTA 1000 event in Beijing, commonly known as the China Open, is one of the premier tournament stops on the women's tennis calendar.

Dominant first set performance

Swiatek started the match in dominant fashion, taking the opening game without losing a point before converting her first break point to gain an early advantage. Although Jovic increased her aggressiveness on serve in the next game, Swiatek held her own serve to build a 3-0 lead.

Jovic had two opportunities to hold serve in the fourth game, but Swiatek fought back to force deuce and secured another break point, which she converted for a 4-0 lead. Her high level of play prompted Polish commentator Dawid Celt to remark during the live broadcast on Canal+ Sport that Swiatek was bordering on near-perfect execution.

Serving at 5-0 and 40-15, Swiatek earned two set points, but Jovic used her serve to extend the set and get on the scoreboard. Swiatek then wrapped up the opening set 6-1 on her serve after 37 minutes and five total set points, registering 16 winners and six unforced errors.

Second set fightback and decisive break

The second set began with Swiatek breaking Jovic almost immediately to secure a 2-0 lead. However, the American teenager began playing better as Swiatek rushed her points, allowing Jovic to break back, save two break points, and take a 3-2 lead.

Swiatek halted her opponent's three-game streak by holding serve for 3-3, which proved to be the pivotal moment of the set. Playing with renewed confidence, Swiatek earned three break points from 40-0 in the next game, converting one to lead 4-3 before saving two break points on her serve to preserve the advantage and complete a straight-sets victory.

Quarterfinal matchup

By securing her place in the top eight in Beijing, Swiatek advances to a quarterfinal clash against either Coco Gauff of the United States or Elise Mertens of Belgium.

Gauff, an American Grand Slam champion, and Mertens, an experienced Belgian competitor, play in the fourth round to determine who will advance to face Swiatek in the quarterfinal stage.
