Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel is in intensive care after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest following a horrifying on-pitch collision against Andorra on Monday.

The 30-year-old forward was revived by paramedics inside an ambulance on his way to hospital, according to Spanish sports newspaper Marca, after being knocked unconscious deep into stoppage time in the Spanish second division fixture.

De Miguel is being treated in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria. CD Tenerife confirmed that the striker remains in a stable condition despite the severity of the incident, while further reports state that he is breathing on his own.

A club statement released by Tenerife said: "CD Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel is admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, stable despite the severity of his condition. The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates."

Stoppage time collision

The match had reached the seventh minute of stoppage time with the score tied at 2-2 when De Miguel broke forward on a counter-attack in search of a late winner. As the striker tracked a long ball dropping ahead of him, Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono rushed out towards the halfway line in an attempt to clear the danger.

Owono jumped to reach the ball and his flying knee caught De Miguel directly in the chest. De Miguel initially rolled across the pitch before becoming completely motionless, prompting medical staff from both teams to sprint onto the field.

Doctors and paramedics treated the forward on the pitch for more than five minutes. His team-mates were visibly distressed throughout the stoppage, with several players breaking down in tears as emergency personnel worked around the stricken striker.

The referee initially showed Owono a red card for the challenge near the halfway line. However, match officials quickly made the decision to abandon the fixture as the extreme seriousness of De Miguel's condition became evident to everyone present.

Hospital transfer and support

The entire stadium fell into complete silence while De Miguel received emergency care on the pitch. When the forward was finally placed onto a stretcher and carried towards the tunnel, supporters broke the silence by giving him a standing ovation.

De Miguel was moved directly into a waiting ambulance, where there was an approximate 15-minute wait before the vehicle left the ground for the hospital. Spanish outlet Marca reported that the striker suffered a cardiac arrest during transit and required emergency revival procedures inside the vehicle.

FC Andorra offered their support to the forward and his club following the abandonment. In a statement, the club said: "We want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesus de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today's match. We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family and Tenerife."

De Miguel joined Tenerife after previously playing for Castellon. Both Tenerife, based on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and FC Andorra compete in Spain's Segunda Division, the second tier of the national football league system below La Liga.

Medical staff at the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria will continue to monitor De Miguel in intensive care, with the hospital and Tenerife due to issue further medical reports as his recovery continues.
