Lewis Hall has agreed a new five-year contract extension at Newcastle United, securing his long-term future at St James' Park without a release clause.
The 22-year-old left-back was identified as Manchester United's top recruitment target for the defensive position during the summer transfer window. However, Newcastle executives maintained a firm stance that the player was not available for sale under any circumstances.
During formal talks between the clubs, Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson directly informed Old Trafford chief executive Omar Berrada that Hall would not be leaving Tyneside. Manchester United accepted the position and opted against submitting a formal bid later in the transfer window.
Negotiations over extended terms accelerated last week, resulting in an agreement that includes improved financial terms and a two-year extension to his commitment. Legal teams spent this week reviewing the finalized documentation for the five-year deal ahead of an official announcement by the club.
Crucially, the contract structure does not feature a buy-out clause. The omission comes despite persistent suggestions from sources in Manchester that the Red Devils intended to launch a renewed attempt to sign the defender next summer.
While Manchester United retain an interest in the defender, the new contract safeguards Newcastle's financial position and rewards Hall for his progression since arriving from Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2023. Newcastle paid £35 million for the full-back, who has since made 102 appearances and scored three goals for the club.
Hall's domestic performances have earned him four senior international caps for England. He is expected to be named in head coach Thomas Tuchel's first national squad of the season next Friday when the manager announces his selection for four upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Contract extensions for Murphy and Willock
Newcastle United are also preparing contract extension talks for long-serving midfielders Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock following the closure of the summer transfer window.
Both players have entered the final 12 months of their existing contracts. Club executives plan to open formal discussions to extend their stays at St James' Park by an additional year.
The move follows significant external interest during the summer window, during which Newcastle rejected a £15 million formal offer from Premier League side Nottingham Forest for winger Murphy. Turkish Super Lig club Besiktas also explored a £17 million deal to sign Willock.
Murphy joined Newcastle from Norwich City in 2017, while Willock completed a permanent move from Arsenal in 2021, establishing the pair among the longest-serving members of the current squad. Head coach Matthias Jaissle informed club management of their ongoing value to the team and requested that both remain at the club.
Injury recovery for William Osula
Striker William Osula has made significant physical progress after removing his protective boot, allowing him to regain full mobility at Newcastle's training ground.
Media reports in Denmark last week suggested that the 23-year-old Danish forward had suffered a severe foot injury that would result in an extended absence. The initial issue was first reported two weeks ago, but subsequent medical testing confirmed that Osula has not sustained a bone fracture and will not require surgery.
Medical staff are currently overseeing Osula's conditioning program. Club trainers are attempting to prepare the striker for potential inclusion in the squad for next weekend's Premier League match against newly promoted Hull City, which represents the final fixture before a three-week international break.
However, club sources indicate that a more likely target for Osula's return is the away fixture against Coventry City on October 12, immediately following the international matches. Head coach Matthias Jaissle has only been able to deploy the forward for 56 minutes of competitive action so far this season.
In addition, Newcastle medical staff are evaluating a hamstring injury sustained by defender Amar Dedic during Tuesday night's match against Millwall. Early medical assessments suggest the injury is not severe.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo position preference
Summer signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo has informed Newcastle management that he wants to play primarily as a central striker, aligning with the club's plan for his tactical role.
The 21-year-old forward arrived at St James' Park last month from French Ligue 1 side Lille, where he ended the previous campaign playing in a central attacking role. Prior to March, Fernandez-Pardo had played predominantly as a left winger, having started only once as a centre-forward in Ligue 1 during the preceding season.
During initial transfer negotiations last month, Fernandez-Pardo expressed a clear preference to play as a number nine, a request Newcastle agreed to fulfill. Internal data analysis conducted by the club identified only two players with statistical profiles matching winger Anthony Gordon across both left-wing and central striker metrics: Fernandez-Pardo and Said El Mala of German Bundesliga club Cologne.
Although 20-year-old El Mala remained at Cologne through the transfer window, he remains on Newcastle's ongoing transfer target list. Fernandez-Pardo's role as a central striker will see him compete with Osula for a starting berth, while Yoane Wissa is expected to operate predominantly as an attacking midfielder in the number 10 position.

Newcastle United previously held exploratory discussions with midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi three years ago when the player was 15 years old and developing in Lille's youth academy.
Club officials and recruiters met with Bouaddi and his family to build a relationship prior to his senior professional debut. However, multiple European clubs monitored the player following his impressive performances for Morocco at the World Cup.
The 18-year-old midfielder eventually completed an £85.6 million transfer from Lille to Premier League champions Manchester City last month, where he has quickly established himself in the first-team squad.
New commercial sponsorship deals
Newcastle United will officially announce a multi-million-pound commercial partnership with global beverage company Coca-Cola this week.
Under the terms of the agreement, Coca-Cola will become the official sponsor of the STACK fan zone located at St James' Park, replacing previous sponsor Sela, the Saudi Arabian live events company.
Newcastle have also finalized a multi-year extension to their existing commercial partnership with sports betting and entertainment operator BetMGM. Both agreements were negotiated by chief executive David Hopkinson as part of a broader strategy to increase commercial revenue streams, with additional sponsorship announcements anticipated in the coming months.
