Olympique Lyonnais lost 2-1 to Fenerbahçe in their Champions League play-off second leg at Parc OL in Décines on Wednesday, missing out on Europe's top club competition for a seventh consecutive year.
The defeat meant the Turkish club advanced 3-2 on aggregate following a 1-1 draw eight days earlier in Istanbul, a match Lyon largely controlled. Lyon will play in the Europa League this season.
Missing out on the Champions League first phase cost Lyon an initial 18.62 million euros in cash prize money, in addition to higher stadium revenues and television rights compared to the Europa League. John Textor has since arrived at the club, and the economic reality is now completely different. Qualification could have allowed the club to retain its highest-value player, Malick Fofana, and set higher ambitions in Ligue 1.
Lyon's last Champions League campaign was the 2019-2020 season, when they defeated Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 3-1 in the quarter-finals, with Maxwel "Mad Max" Cornet jokingly touted for the Ballon d'Or, before losing 3-0 to Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.
The club reached this year's play-off by beating Sparta Prague 3-0 in the previous round, a match attended by 51,494 people on August 11.
First-half struggles
As in recent determining home matches against Celta Vigo, a 2-0 defeat, and Lens, a 4-0 defeat, Paulo Fonseca's players completely missed the first half and conceded twice in four minutes.
Oguz Aydin, who was causing problems throughout the match, crossed the ball in the 24th minute, and Vedat Muriqi beat Abner Vinicius in the air. Lyon goalkeeper Greif saved the striker's powerful header, but Muriqi beat Abner again to score the rebound with his right foot.
In the 28th minute, full-back Brown doubled the lead with a header from a corner. He was left untroubled to place his header following disastrous defending by Ainsley Maitland-Niles, while Greif was also not free from blame.
Lyon nearly benefited from an own goal in the 35th minute when Muriqi appeared to deflect a Maitland-Niles corner against the post while contesting the ball with Ruben Kluivert.
Fofana reduced the deficit in the 61st minute with an absolutely perfect volley that fell from the sky, following a perfect pass from Maitland-Niles. Lyon then had two goals ruled out, from Loïs Openda in the 64th minute and Kaïl Boudache in the 71st.
Late substitutions and scuffle
Fenerbahçe substituted Muriqi and Mason Greenwood in the 80th minute, bringing on the "buffalo" Romelu Lukaku. Two minutes later, Greif saved a deflected shot from Mattéo Guendouzi.
Lyon held possession to avoid danger before Abner went off injured in the 85th minute. He was replaced by Nicolas Tagliafico, who conceded a foul against Ederson in the air in the 90th minute.
Pavel Sulc, known for his legendary nose in the penalty area, replaced Tessmann in stoppage time as Lyon sought an equaliser. Guendouzi then received a foul for completely immobilising Sulc with his arms to stop a counter-attack. A subsequent foul on Boudache halted a three-on-one counter for Fenerbahçe.
Lyon had a late free kick cleared in the 96th minute. A minute later, Fenerbahçe wasted a counter-attack before Sulc was stopped in the penalty area.
After the final whistle, Guendouzi danced in front of the Lyon supporters by the pitch. Corentin Tolisso argued with the midfielder, described as the French greatest of all time for provocation, and a general scuffle broke out as players chased Guendouzi down the tunnel to the dressing rooms.
Ticket cancellations
The match was attended by 55,445 spectators, including a full away section of more than 2,800 Fenerbahçe supporters authorized by UEFA to travel.
The National Division for the Fight against Hooliganism had classified the game as a four out of five for risk. Lyon cancelled 437 tickets in a hunt against illegal resale to Fenerbahçe fans. Lyon's management warned that resale was strictly forbidden outside official platforms, and that tickets bought on unauthorized platforms could be cancelled without refund, with holders refused entry to Parc OL on match day.
The club aimed to avoid a repeat of the chaos during a 2-1 win against Besiktas in the 2017 Europa League quarter-final first leg, when poor ticketing management allowed more than 20,000 Turkish fans to attend and fights broke out in the concourses and stands. For a subsequent 1-0 Europa League defeat to Besiktas in October 2024, Lyon restricted the stadium capacity to a cautious 30,000.
Starting lineups
Fonseca named the exact same starting 11 as the first leg, with Kluivert, Maitland-Niles and Tessmann retaining their places over options like Bacher, Athekame and Bidstrup. None of the starting players had featured from kickoff in the team's 2-0 defeat to Toulouse in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
Fenerbahçe made one forced change from the first leg, with Aydin replacing the injured Aktürkoglu. Marco Asensio also missed the match through injury. The Turkish club's squad also features N'Golo Kanté.
