Lunin: I’m glad to take the field again, but Lille needed to win

The Ukrainian goalkeeper played his first match this season yesterday

Goalkeeper Real Madrid Andrey Lunin commented on his team’s defeat in the second round Champions League against Lille (0:1).

“It’s difficult to analyze the game. I don’t know if we lacked aggressiveness, creativity or fight… In the second half we improved the game, but, of course, we always want to win, we understand what colors we are defending. Nothing bad happened, we need to continue working.”

“I’m glad to be out on the field again, but Lille needed to win. We haven’t achieved this, so I can’t be happy.”

The only goal in the confrontation between Lille and Real Madrid was scored by Jonathan David from the penalty spot at the end of the first half.

Andrey Lunin played his first match of the season. Real Madrid’s main goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is experiencing muscle problems after the Madrid derby with Atletico Madrid (1:1). Earlier it was reported that the Belgian could return to the field after the international break for matches of national teams.

Last season, due to an injury to Courtois, Lunin was Real’s main goalkeeper – he played 31 matches for the team in all tournaments, managing to keep a clean sheet in 12 of them. The Ukrainian was subsequently nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or award for the best goalkeeper of the year.

In September, Lunin extended his contract with Real Madrid, signing a new agreement until 2030.

Real Madrid will play their next match on October 5 in La Liga at home against Villarreal. In the Champions League, Carlo Ancelotti’s team will now play on October 22 in a home match against Borussia Dortmund.
