In the LE match, Roman appeared as a substitute, but managed to play only 95 seconds before suffering a nose injury
Head coach Olympiacos Jose Luis Mendilibar commented on the injury received by his ward Roman Yaremchuk in the away match of the 5th round Europa League against FCSB (0:0).
“It is true that Yaremchuk’s injury was a major setback for us because at that moment we had a numerical advantage and we tried to capitalize on it by adding another striker. When he came on you saw that he created an important opportunity, but we lost that advantage because of his injury.”
“Players get injured throughout the season and no matter how big your squad is, it’s never enough. We didn’t have another striker on the bench to replace him as we would have liked. That’s the schedule – we probably need to give our players more rest, but we can’t do that with so many games in a row.”
Let us remind you that the Ukrainian striker came on as a substitute in the 77th minute – by that time his team was playing in the numerical majority. Soon Roman got a chance to score – he headed home after a flank cross, but in this episode he received a hard collision with the back of the head of the hosts’ defender Mihai Popescu. The result is disappointing: a broken nose, a lot of blood and a forced reverse substitution in the 85th minute (midfielder Sergio Oliveira came on instead of Roman). The net time Yaremchuk spent on the field was only 95 seconds.
On Wednesday, November 27, Yaremchuk turned 29 years old. The Ukrainian has been playing very little lately. Yesterday’s appearance on the field was his first in a month (at the club level) and only the second within the League of Legends. In total, he played 9 matches (213 minutes) for Olympiacos and scored one goal. Roman is performing much more consistently in the Ukrainian national team – in particular, in November he scored the winning goal for Albania (2:1) in the 6th round of Group B1 of the 2024/25 Nations League.
Olympiacos, with 8 points, is in 14th place in the overall stage of the Europa League. In the next round, Mendilibar’s team will host Twente on December 12.
