Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of the Senegal national team, returning to international management following his departure from Italian club Genoa last November.
Vieira, who is 50 years old and was born in Senegal, succeeds Pape Thiaw after the Senegalese Football Federation dismissed the former manager following Senegal's elimination against Belgium in the round of 32 at the World Cup.
Vieira secured the role after a long competition with fellow French coach Herve Renard, who had also been under strong consideration for the Senegal position. Renard ultimately took charge of Ivory Coast on August 4, returning to the Ivorian national team 11 years after his previous stint with the Elephants.
Strategic Appointment by Senegalese Federation
In an official statement announcing the decision, the Senegalese Football Federation described the hiring of Vieira as a strategic choice for the future of the national team.
The federation stated that the appointment marks a new stage in its ongoing efforts to establish high-level technical management that aligns directly with the sporting ambitions of Senegal.
The Senegalese Football Federation, based in Dakar, is the governing body responsible for overseeing competitive football across the nation and managing the national team, popularly known as the Lions of Teranga. Senegal stands as one of West Africa's primary footballing powers.
Managerial Track Record in Europe and MLS
The appointment ends a period of several months out of management for Vieira, who had been inactive since leaving Genoa in November following a challenging spell in Serie A.
Before his tenure in Italy, the 1998 World Cup winner compiled extensive managerial experience across major leagues in Europe and North America. He began his senior coaching career in Major League Soccer with New York City from 2015 to 2018, before returning to France to manage Ligue 1 club Nice from 2018 to 2020.
Vieira subsequently spent two seasons in the English Premier League in charge of Crystal Palace from 2021 to 2023, followed by a campaign at French side Strasbourg from 2023 to 2024.
Born in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to France as a child, Vieira established himself as one of the world's premier midfielders during a decorated playing career, most notably captaining Arsenal during their unbeaten Premier League season and winning the 1998 World Cup with France.
National Team Direction Following World Cup Exit
Vieira now assumes responsibility for steering Senegal into their next tournament cycle as the federation seeks to build beyond their recent World Cup campaign.
Previous manager Pape Thiaw was relieved of his duties by the federation following Senegal's knockout exit against Belgium in the round of 32, opening the way for Vieira to lead the Lions of Teranga.
