The Chilean franchise won 15-8 over its Uruguayan pair at the end of the initial phase. In the playoffs, the national team will face the Argentinian XV of the Jaguares.
In the last game of the regular phase of the American Rugby Super League 2022, Selknam defeated Peñarol by 15 to 8, at the Charrúa stadium in Montevideo. The match was to end the inning. It didn’t mean anything more relevant (both were seeded for the next stage), but it did put two of the best teams in the competition head-to-head.
The Uruguayans started to dominate and added their only eight points. However, the Chilean franchise returned for the second half. Until 10 minutes, Peñarol led 8-0. A Francisco Urroz penalty gave Selknam the first three points. For the second half, the nationals scored two tries, thanks to Marcelo Torrealba and Lucas Strabucchi, respectively.
Selknam finished the regular phase in second place, with 37 points, behind Peñarol. The first four in the table qualify for the semi-finals. The Charrúas, as leaders, will play the first semi-final against the Colombians of Cafeteros Pro, who finished in fourth place. As a result, The Chilean team will have to face the Argentinian XV of the Jaguares, third in the first round. The Transandinos are the last SLAR champions.
The Chilean team won five in a row, at the close of the initial round: 41-19 against Olimpia Lions of Paraguay, 37-8 against Cobras XV of Brazil, 23-10 against Jaguares XV, 64-3 against Cafeteros Pro (the looser difference of the tournament) and this Sunday 15-8 against the Uruguayans of Peñarol.
The SLAR 2022 final is scheduled for May 28 in Montevideo.
