Motorola Edge 30 Pro: the arrival in the high end

For years, the brand has remained very comfortable in the mid-range of the smartphone market, a place won in Chile thanks to sustained launches for all budgets. But now the leap is made.

OK, I admit: I have Motorola in a special place in my heart. My first television was a black and white Motorola, and since then, from different equipment and electronic devices, the traditional logo and its mark have been part of my life. From being the great North American telecommunications company (the world’s first cell phone, in 1973, was a Motorola), to its iconic RAZR clam cell phone (from 2005), the separation of the company in 2011 (between Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobile), the acquisition of the latter by Google in 2012 and, finally, a new sale in 2014, this time to the Chinese giant Lenovo, where it now has its home.

If the brand has retained its original essence, it has reinvented itself in its global positioning. Today, Motorola Mobile is a successful company that has experienced substantial growth during the pandemic and shares a very good market share: after LG’s departure, it is the third best-selling mobile brand in the United States. United. In Chile, the situation is practically the same.

It has earned this spot by consolidating its mid-range devices, with multiple variables and at very advantageous prices. Its operating system is clean, fast and functional, with very good technical characteristics within the range. This is the niche they have cornered and nothing has gone wrong for them.

But after the good results of recent years, Motorola has decided to aim higher. Not only did they present their first physical store in Chile in 2022 (located in Mall Plaza Vespucio): they also brought their new device, the first that they want to position towards the top of the range: the Motorola Edge 30 Pro . Let’s get to know it in detail.

Good size and light, although with far buttons

When I took the device out of its box, the first thing that caught my eye was its lightness, design and color. The build is plastic and its chassis tone is a mesmerizing “cosmic green” (manufacturer’s name), which is really quite pleasing to the eye. Its design is very functional, with a large screen that we are going to analyze.

Inside the box we also find a powerful 68W charger (which also includes wireless charging), the corresponding USB cable and the classic transparent silicone protective cover.

From the front, as we said, we have a generous 6.7-inch OLED display. It’s a big cell phone, long and wide, although it weighs less than 200 grams. When you explore it with your fingers, the first question arises: on the right side of the model are the typical power buttons and biometric reader (power button) as well as the volume buttons. But curiously, Motorola has decided to put them almost at the upper end of the side, so you have to stretch your fingers a lot to get to press them, which is not very comfortable. Curious decision.

The left side is clean and the back of the phone has a very characteristic Motorola design, with rather curved side edges, the brand logo in the middle and the name below. The module for the three objectives is rather medium in size and below it is the traditional: the SIM card tray, a USB-C input and one of the two stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. But there is no mini jack audio input, as has become customary in this range.

Big screen and better performance

The Edge 30 Pro feels rich, feels nice and light in the hand, with a design that embodies the brand’s visual vibe. Motorola’s interface is smooth and doesn’t present any major issues when managing or setting up the phone. In fact, it allows for a fair amount of customization in every way.

The processor-memory-display combination is a winning combo. On the one hand, the Edge 30 Pro is equipped with the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In fact, the brand was the first to debut on the market with this powerful new engine. If we add to this its generous 12 GB of memory and its large OLED screen, with an adaptive refresh rate capable of reaching 144 Hz (the standard today for the range is 120 Hz), also very customizable, we have a very high yield.

We subjected it to both common applications – messaging, web browsing, streaming – and high-demand video games, and even with the features set to maximum capacity, the cell phone suffered no shock during the period of test. Scrolling through social media was a joy, and games ran quickly and smoothly. Alright there.

The only detail could be the automatic brightness, little able to adapt to changes in ambient light. A few times I had to manually modify it to properly fit the light that was there at the time.

Battery with fast charge and very correct photos

We emphasize again the wide scope of customization offered by the phone. Starting with the notifications but also passing through the themes, the shapes of the icons and even the choice of fonts: all these details, very close, give it an additional layer that makes the device more unique and personal. .

For better or for worse, the system constantly gives advice to improve the use of the device. The 4800mAh battery is up to the task and performs very well overall, with a charge that far exceeds the day’s use (depending on intensity, of course). If the refresh rate of 144hz is always used, it is enough for a day, but if it is lowered to 60hz, it can reach almost two. In addition, its fast charging ensures that the mobile phone can always and quickly be charged: in 50 minutes it goes from zero to 100%.

Finally, the camera section is decent and generally works well. There are good specifications for macros, zooms or telephoto lenses in terms of pixel count, but clearly the system and the photographic software are not at the level of other high-end models -like Samsung, for example-. beyond the fact that it includes HDR10 +, optical stabilization, night photography and video recording up to 8K. But it is an option to achieve the desired balance between performance and price.

Practical verdict

Let’s be fair: with this model, Motorola has indeed made a substantial leap in its quest to reach the top of the range. There’s still a bit of a way to go to reach the more premium competition, but it might even be something practical price-wise. It is undoubtedly a formidable device, which settles in a high-end entry-level category, so to speak, very close to the high-end but, unlike other manufacturers, it does not exceed the million pesos. This is not the case.

In this sense, Motorola presents here its most powerful and attractive smartphone, but at an extremely favorable price according to its specifications, ready for absolutely any type of user who wants a premium experience without too much fanfare.
