swedish skiers May Dahlquist and Lynn Swan said they were ready to boycott the 2023 World Cup in Planica if Russian athletes were allowed to participate in the tournament.
At the end of February, the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that federations ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions because of the situation in Ukraine. The International Ski Federation (FIS) has followed these recommendations. At the end of September, the secretary general of the FIS, Michel Vion, did not exclude that the athletes of the two countries could be authorized to participate in the international departures in a neutral status by December.
— We shouldn’t greet Russian athletes. I think this is a clear position that our sport should have. Unfortunately, sport and politics are linked. Here and now I am definitely ready to boycott the World Cup in Planica,” Swan said as quoted by Aftonbladet.
Dahlqvist also expressed his willingness to boycott the tournament.
“I think that’s how most people think now. It’s more than a sport. The decision (of some IFs) to admit is completely wrong. I don’t understand how they talk. I don’t don’t see the point of their return,” said the Olympic medalist from Beijing.
Another Swedish skier Frida Karlson said she has yet to decide whether she is ready to miss the World Cup, which will be held from February 22 to March 5, 2023.
Earlier, Russian Ski Racing Federation President Elena Vyalbe told that the decision on admitting Russians to international competitions will be taken by the FIS in October.
