Four-time Olympic champion, former president of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) Alexander Tikhonov told that he advised the head of the Biathlon Federation of the Transbaikal Territory, Gennady Kovalev, to choose a person who understands the sport in the upcoming RBU elections, and not to vote specifically for Viktor Maygurov .
Earlier, Kovalev said Tikhonov called him and persuaded him to vote for Maygurov in the Oct. 14 election. Kovalev also claimed pressure on him from the regional sports ministry.
– Gennady Kovalev says you called him and persuaded him to vote for Maigurov. It’s true?
“I have never bowed down to anyone and I never bow down. Kovalyov openly admitted that Nuzhdov gave him money and therefore voted for him. Is this normal? Gena, probably mistaken for a hangover and thought I had persuaded her. I did not convince him, I explained to him that he had to make the right choice. Otherwise, there will come a colonel who understands nothing about biathlon. We’ve been there before.
I represent everyone minding their own business. Boots must be made by a cobbler! And a biathlete should lead the biathlon. And Kovalev replies: “Maygurov did not give me money, he did not give me this …”. Listen, we sit on the neck of the state, the taxpayers. Our return is medals. And what medals does he have during his coaching work? Virtually none. Once there, a representative of the Transbaikal Territory won something in a relay race. It’s 40 years! I am not ashamed of my work either at the SBR or elsewhere. And what did he do? What did he win? And now it has sold for a penny,” Tikhonov told a correspondent.
Repeated elections for the president of the RBU will be held in Moscow on October 14. The current head of the RRF, Viktor Maigurov, and the vice-president of the organization, Alexei Nuzhdov, are candidates for this post.
