Olympic champion, double world champion in cross-country skiing Sergei Ustyugov named Russian Championship medals as his goals for the season and said he was completely resigned to the lack of international starts.
Did the summer go well?
– No wasted time. I trained well, got my body in order, and judging by the interval work, I’m in good shape. You just have to gain experience in competition, because I missed the end of last season. There are many interesting things to come, I look forward to winter. No matter how some people accuse me of being lazy. For me, this season, on the contrary, is a challenge. It’s interesting to see what’s going on. The goals are clear – the medals of the Russian championship.
– You don’t believe in international competitions at all?
“I completely accepted that,” Ustyugov told Sport24.
Ustyugov, 30, is an Olympic champion in the 4 × 10 km relay (2022), double world champion in 2017, winner of the multi-day race of the Tour de Ski in the 2016/2017 season, triple world champion champion in the youth, five-time world champion among juniors.
The International Ski Federation (FIS) suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions in February due to events in Ukraine, the decision was indefinite while in effect and is expected to be reviewed by the FIS Council on October 22.
