Biathlete Elizaveta Kaplina said that the proposal to participate in the ski tournament “Yugoriya. The first snow” came from Russian national team coach Artem Istomin.
On Tuesday, Kaplina took third place in the 5km time trial at the Khanty-Mansiysk tournament. The victory was won by skier Maria Istomina, the second was Olympic champion Natalya Nepryaeva.
– How come you competed with skiers in Khanty?
– It was the initiative of Artem Evgenievich (Istomin). When we were at the training camp at the Seminsky Pass, he said to me: “Here the skiers are doing the test in Khanty, let’s participate.” I said, “Let’s go,” but I thought he said it jokingly. I forgot this conversation, and a few days before the end of the rally, he said to me: “That’s it, I told you, you run”. OK, run, nowhere to go. So yesterday I returned to Khanty-Mansiysk after the training camp, and today I ran this race,” the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) press service quoted Kaplina as saying.
– Did you have experience competing with such eminent skiers as Natalya Nepryaeva?
– No, for me it’s the first race of this kind in adulthood.
Was Artem Evgenievich in the race?
— Yes, he was on the track, led me. Warm-up, cool-down, all lifts. He gave me all the information along the way.
What did he say after the race?
– “Come on, slow down. Then we’ll talk.” (Laughs.) After that, I haven’t called yet.
