Former RBU chief on postponement of KM stage in ski racing in Italy: “I’m sure there are options, but electricity prices will bite”

Former President of the Russian Biathlon Union Vladimir Drachev commenting on the postponement of the Ski World Cup in Italy due to electricity problems, in a conversation with a correspondent, he expressed the opinion that the organizers have options to solve this problem, but all will require large outlays.

Previously, the International Ski Federation (FIS) moved the World Cup stage from Milan to Livigno (Italy) due to rising energy costs and the inability to produce artificial snow for this reason. At the end of October, the FIS extended indefinitely the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions under its auspices.

– It’s a sad situation, it’s a pity. We are offended because our athletes are not performing. After all, our skiers are leaders in the skiing world. And now, due to lack of electricity, the rest of the athletes will not compete and will face difficulties in some specific races. Of course, they will try to achieve as much as possible without additional snow, since most of the electricity is spent on making snow. Firearms, water, etc. – all this at the expense of electricity. And electricity is now saved, prices in some places have increased almost fivefold. I don’t even know what will happen next.

Electricity costs are huge. From whom and how will they buy this electricity? I’m sure there are options, but the prices will be very biting.

I am also very worried that the ski slopes are not covered with snow, because everyone is used to making artificial snow, and now natural snow will not be very convenient for skiers. Everyone is used to hard tracks, now it will be the other way around, everything will change,” Drachev told .

During the Livigno stage, which will take place as planned – on January 21 and 22, individual and team sprint races will take place.
