Skater Bazhanova on the fate of the “golden” Olympic rink for her: “The closure will be a big loss, I wanted to go back there with my daughter”

Svetlana Bazhanova, 1994 Olympic champion in speed skating, believes the closure of the Vikingskipet rink in Hamar, Norway will be a great loss for speed skating.

According to Hamar Arbeiderblad, the ice rink could be converted into a mini football hall due to high energy costs, in particular due to the ice content.

– This will be a deplorable decision, although in principle the arena can be redesigned without removing the ice equipment. It is one of the most brilliant indoor stadiums of its time, where athletes perform with pleasure. When you go there, you lose track of time. The Norwegians know better what to do with their facilities, but it will be a big loss for speed skating,” Bazhanova told .

– I was hoping that one day my daughter (Alexandra Sayutina) could compete there, because she has started speed skating and is showing results at the level. She dreamed of going back there one day with her daughter, she added.

Bazhanova won the gold medal at the 1994 Games on this rink at a distance of 3000 meters.
