The 1994 Olympic ice rink “Vikingskipet”, located in Hamar, Norway, can become a mini football hall.
In addition to the 1994 Olympics, Vikingskipet has hosted the World and European Championships, as well as stages of the Speed Skating World Cup.
In January 2023, the arena is scheduled to host the European All-Around Championships, in 2025 – the World Single Distance Championships, but the Norwegian Ministry of Culture does not intend to pay for the power supply of the rink. “We have to solve this problem, otherwise there will be no ice,” Mayor Einar Busterud said in an interview with Hamar Arbeiderblad.
The publication reports that the electricity consumption for a day of operation of the rink corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of a family.
Hamar hopes to receive additional funds soon to operate the rink. If this does not happen, the municipality can turn the arena into a futsal hall.
The Norwegian Skating Federation has until December 1 to notify the International Skating Union (ISU) of the possibility of hosting the 2025 World Championships in this arena.
“Unfortunately, we have to say that no indoor rink is self-contained. Even in the Netherlands it’s a matter of subsidies,” Alexander Kibalko, head of the ISU technical committee, told .
