Winner of the Speed Skating World Championships Evgeniya Lalenkova said she would not like to compete on open rinks, noting the difficulties athletes face due to weather conditions.
The second stage of the Russian Cup was held in St. Petersburg at the BA Shilkov stadium. Lalenkova won the 1500m and 3000m.
– I went to St. Petersburg knowing that it is an open ice rink. I do not really support the opinion of those who call it half-closed – it does not save from wind, precipitation, if the wind is oblique too. At the same time, surprisingly, everything went well at 3000 m. Going to the start, I did not believe that it was possible to beat the ice rink record, which belonged to Olga Graf, but thanks to the first circles I had a good start, I kept it, in the end not everything went according to plan, but it was enough to break the record.
The second day, I didn’t go out to ride anymore. On the third day, the departure was delayed by 1 hour and 10 minutes. We put on skates and they told us it was carried over from another 15 – they were taken off and the ice was sealed up there. Forty minutes I sat ready, did not even run – they warmed up several times. We raced like a race, during the “truck” I realized I had to give up from the mass start. Usually I don’t do that, I usually run the distances I applied for, but on the third day it was very cold, there was a strong wind. Also, they start en masse on a small track, not on a warm-up track, that’s another plus.
I would not want to run on open rinks, but we have no options – the Russian Cups are held there, I will run and organize in Kirov in the New Year. In general, everything is in the same conditions. Yes, there are gusts of wind, but I can’t say that the girls had any surprises over the distances. Guys, yes they were. The girls in the awards were the ones that should be, – said the athlete.
