“The coach must adapt to the athlete and push his “I” – Maxim Maximov

Coach of the Russian men’s biathlon team Maxim Maximov talked about the differences in the work of a coach and an athlete.

– The athlete is only responsible for himself and his result. And in this regard, nothing seems to have changed, the coach is also focused on the result, but here you are no longer responsible for yourself. In coaching, there are many different variables that must be brought together: at the level of the psychology of an athlete, his attitude towards this sport, at a certain start.

A banal example: someone wants to shout before the start, to express themselves, and you really have to give them this opportunity. Some people, on the other hand, need peace. The coach has to adapt more during the period when there are competitions. For athletes, it’s a small life, it’s their career. Here, of course, you have to push your “I” just to show the result as a trainer. But for athletes, the opposite is true. There is such a contrast here.

Of course, I didn’t finish my athletic career yesterday, I’ve been coaching since 2014, so I have little experience, and I think I will succeed in terms of the necessary changes. But when I just moved, there was such a difficulty, – quotes the words of Maksimov “Championship”.
