“Boys say I’m an inscrutable person.” Interview with Viktor Mushtakov

– Did you take the first step towards the first team before the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang?

– I was a candidate, but half of the guys did not go, and then I was still “green” and also stayed at home.

“Was it too soon?”

– I think so. The experience was lacking. Since then, a lot of work has been done. And before Pyeongchang, I managed to work in the group with Dmitry Anatolyevich for only a year. I went to training camp at local expense as a promising reservist.

Was the transition to adult sport difficult for you?

– When you come to a new coach, it’s always something different in terms of work. You have to adapt. Since I started training with Dorofeev, in technical terms, of course, a lot has changed.

– And they began to visit Kolomna more often.

– That’s for sure (Laughs). Permanent place of training.

– Where did you train in the Altai Territory?

– At the Klevcheni stadium. It’s an outdoor rink, so I’m tough. Minus 35, and watery eyes, immediately freeze – these are the conditions, but somehow got out, got into the team.

– Did they immediately spot a sprinter in you?

– The stuff of a sprinter has always been, but I ran everywhere. Even 5000 and 3000 m he won the Russian championship. A distance and a half used to be one of my signature distances, but now I’m running a sprint.

– Do you fancy volumes?

– I can barely control that much now, because we do different jobs.

– Why is a child sent to speed skating in the Altai Territory?

– There were few choices. At the age of four he came to the rink – followed his brother. I was bored, cried and followed him – this stadium is five minutes from my house. Near, free of charge, skates were donated …

Were there other training options?

– Sambo (smiling). I literally did just a little.

– Before the Olympics, you had a personal medal at the World Championships in Inzell. How unexpected was she at that time?

– I already understood in training that the seconds were good and I had reached a decent level at that time. The coach said I could compete with the strongest and win prizes. Past. Before that, there was a medal in Tomakomai at the World Cup.

– Are you a sprinter? You are always very calm in communication.

– Like a sprinter. I am very explosive and angry. This is another matter that it’s hard to piss me off, but if you do, you can seriously piss me off.

– How can you bring it?

– If you get it when I haven’t slept enough

– Do you have childhood memories of speed skating? Have you watched the Olympics?

– Here the answer is simple. Since I trained at the Klevchenya rink, I have always focused on him. I looked at photos, videos of his races from the Games. I dreamed of training with him. As a result, I managed to do it first for the juniors, now I’m in the national team and he coaches the women’s sprint.

What are the most memorable races you have seen in your life?

– Pasha Kulizhnikov’s record in Salt Lake at 1000m It was something, just wow! You think it’s an impossible outcome, and now the person training next to you breaks the world record.

– The period when you had failures, falls. Have you ever had any fears associated with this?

– Nope. I had the most serious fall in Chelyabinsk. On New Year’s Eve, they put up a Christmas tree. I fell, I flew into the area where everyone changes clothes – there were coaches, athletes. He shot five, gained protrusions, cut his overalls, sideways. The tree was not damaged. I was standing in the center of the circle, I couldn’t fly there according to the laws of physics (Laughs). Every year I fall, get up and keep running. The boys say I’m an inscrutable person.

– What are you doing at training camp, apart from training?

— I am trying to learn English. Previously, not all hands reached. It’s important for a career, for communication. I watch soap operas in the evening, I can watch sports. I watched the Tokyo Olympics – track and field, gymnastics, swimming, taekwondo. I like martial arts, it was interesting to watch it. It’s very cool, not everyone can swing their legs like that (smiling).

A lot of people don’t think it’s a spectator sport at all. In fact, they say the same thing about skates.

– Everyone to his own tastes. Our sport is not popular. You will ask someone: do you even know what speed skating is. Answer: “Is this skating for figure skating?” Many have simply never attended a speed skating competition.

“I’ve heard similar things from divers. ‘Friends think we’re swimming.’

– Here we have a similar situation. I would like the sport to be more popular, for there to be more ice rinks.

We talked here with Ruslan Zakharov about the type of speed skating show you can put on, but you can’t put on an ice show in a speed skating format. Danya Milokhin will not be able to run 5000 meters with Ruslan. Yes, and does not wantLaughs). I don’t know what kind of action can be organized here. Perhaps Milokhin and other stars let them run together, without professional athletes. But no, forget it, it’s nonsense (Laughs). Nothing will come out of this story.
