FIS General Secretary calls comments about possible return of Russian athletes a mistake

Michel Vion, secretary general of the International Ski Federation (FIS), noted that he regretted his remarks on the possible return of Russian athletes to participate in competitions.

In September 2022, Vion announced that the return of Russian and Belarusian skiers to the World Cup could take place in December. This decision can be taken after the relevant recommendation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), since “sport must be independent of politics”. Vion also noted that if allowed, Russian and Belarusian athletes would likely go to neutral status initially.

I said something I shouldn’t have said, it was a mistake. The FIS has decided not to accept Russian and Belarusian athletes, coaches and team leaders. It is quite clear, the decision will be valid all winter, no matter what, — quotes the words of Vion Nettavisen.

Russian athletes do not participate in competitions under the auspices of the International Ski Federation (FIS) due to the situation in Ukraine.
