Babikov: “Abroad, part-time work is normal practice. In Canada, they met biathletes at the checkout of a cafe”

World champion Anton Babikov told that foreign biathletes are more relaxed about part-time work because it doesn’t interfere with their athletic progress.

– Have you earned any money outside of sport?

‘No, it wasn’t like that. Recently, I saw a man on the street handing out flyers…I remember that at one time my brother worked part-time in such places. You call a certain organization and say you need a side job. They already offer you: to dig something today, to clean something tomorrow, to wear something the day after tomorrow, etc.

Being engaged in biathlon since childhood, I had no income, but having approached the age when it is necessary to become independent, I began to achieve results and earn money. I received the minimum tariffs for the region, – said Babikov in an interview with .

– Did any of your teammates work part-time in their youth?

– Those who worked part-time, at that time, were desperate to achieve something in biathlon. In our area, guys worked part-time in car washes, car services, someone even drove a taxi. It’s a forced path, because sport doesn’t make money if you don’t show results. This is the way, unfortunately, to leave biathlon. I managed to reach the age where they gave me some sort of rate.

By the way, part-time work abroad is normal practice. Arriving at a cafe in Canada, we saw biathletes standing behind the cashier who was running with us at the IBU. Sara Bedry , Emma Lander and other current World Cup athletes were there. They all worked in a cafe. someone like Jules Burnett helped hang banners at the stadium.

It’s good that people are so calm about their job, thanks to that they are more liberated, which brings results. When you focus only on sports, you are afraid to pick up a book.

Babikov is the 2017 world relay champion. In addition, the 31-year-old biathlete has won the European Championships four times.
