The former winner of the Biathlon World Cup stages joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Another athlete joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend the country from the invasion of the occupying Kremlin troops. The former winner of the stages of the Biathlon World Cup Andrei Derizemlya announced his mobilization.
The former athlete, who currently holds the position of head of the family, youth and sports department of the Chernigov City Council, said that he should have gone to the front earlier, but an old injury prevented him.
“I had to have Achilles tendon surgery on both legs in the winter, but we decided to do it in the spring, because then you have to walk in open shoes and on crutches.
In the spring, I had an MRI again, I thought that maybe I don’t need to operate, but the professor said that it needs to be done urgently and without fail.
I had surgery in early May under general anesthesia. One week in the hospital, two weeks on crutches and two months of rehabilitation. But, unfortunately, it still hurts.
I applied at the beginning of the summer, but, because of the unit I serve in and my reservation from the City Council, everything was delayed.
I had to write a refusal to reserve from mobilization,” Suspilne quoted Derizemli as saying.
Recall that Derizemlya made his debut at the stages of the Biathlon World Cup in the 1996/1997 season. He took part in five Olympics as part of the Ukrainian team. In the 2002/03 season, he won the mass start race on the Anterselva stage. Currently, Derizemlya also holds the position of Vice President of the Biathlon Federation of Ukraine.
