Skier Savely Korostelev in an interview with , he explained why he left the 30-kilometer skiathlon at the Russian Cup stage in Syktyvkar.
The Russian Cup stage in Syktyvkar took place from January 12 to 15. Korostelev took fourth place in the sprint, 31st in the 15 km freestyle and retired from the race in the skiathlon.
– Many expected that in the sprint in Syktyvkar you could jump into the top three. What went wrong?
– The preparation for this stage was unclear, and for everyone – because of the cold, – Korostelev told . – Maybe it was not enough, considering that I practically did not train before Krasnogorsk. It was not possible because of a trip to China. Before the cold I managed to do a bit of work, well, there was a day between those freezing days.
And so, roughly speaking, I usually arrived more than a week before the race. But the last four days before the start came out blurry, because there was a big cold. As a result, during this period it was only possible to drive for a total of three hours. There was no tone.
It went wrong. I did my best, dressed warmly, but when you go out, the wind blows, you freeze. The main task in such conditions is not to freeze anything, not to get sick. After all, we will soon have a gathering in the mountains.
– Yuri Borodavko usually said before the stage that training in severe frosts does not help athletes.
Most likely, there is no benefit. But sitting at home and relaxing is even less helpful. So sometimes you just have to go out for a walk and not get sick. Speed drills are very hard to do, although I know guys have done them.
What happened during the final sprint itself?
– I was ejected from the track. The balance was not transferred to the descent. It turns out that I began to endure. If I hadn’t gotten up, I might have flown away. That is, I got up, went back to the track, caught my balance, but the guys were already gone. I just couldn’t catch them.
– In the skiathlon, you fell out of the race. Why?
– At the moment I clearly don’t have enough training volume, so I’m not ready to keep up with the guys. I hope everything will be in order for the big starts of the season.
