biathlete Karim Khalili remembers the emotions after the men’s relay at the Beijing Olympics, where the Russians finished third.
Before the last shot of the final leg of the men’s relay, Eduard Latypov, who was in the lead, had a big advantage over his competitors, but the Russian opted for two penalty laps.
– Of course, no one was happy about the bronze medal at that time. Although there was no mess – only devastation. Absolute emptiness inside. A kind of black hole, when you don’t feel any emotion. It looks like you have to somehow react to the result, but it doesn’t work.
But it’s times like these that make relay races interesting, aren’t they? Take the same Norwegians who became champions in Beijing: Legrade didn’t shoot in the first round, he got a penalty loop. It happens, Khalili told RT.
Khalili also explained what happens if you overdo it with shooting practice:
– If you go too far in shooting practice before the competition, your head may simply not have time to rest. In fact, this happens even in the summer – when a lot of attention is paid to shooting in boot camp, for many, by the end of those boot camps, shooting just starts to fall apart. On the other hand, that’s why the head is so tired. Concentration drops – mistakes appear that become a habit. And now it’s dangerous,” he said.
